Money or health?

Posted by hardhatindustry on August 18, 2009

LAC063HIn the building industry many people tend to work under stress to meet deadlines and some are literally married to the job.  How much stress can a person takes depends on the individual’s threshold of tolerance.  Many people I know, especially the highly paid top management people, are on medication mostly for high blood pressure.  Is money more important than health?  Most bosses like their subordinates to be able to work under stress and if you’re one of those who cannot perform under pressure, they will likely to think that you’re no good.  Are bosses being unreasonable?

money_wallpapers_121_2I know of some highly paid bosses who like to scream and swear at you when things didn’t go according to plan or when they themselves are under stress from client or someone higher than them.  Some of them do it to vent out their frustrations whereas others do it for personal gain. Generally, the higher you climb the corporate ladder, the higher are your responsibilities and stress unless you’re the blue-eyed boy of the big boss.

Yes money is important in today’s world but would you let it ruins your health?  You can be earning tens of thousands of dollars each month but if your health is poor, you’re likely to suffer from heart attacks and may not even live to enjoy what you’ve earned.

In my opinion, there must be a balance in one’s life.  A well paid job doesn’t necessary mean it’s a good job for you.  Sometimes it’s better to earn a little less and be happy instead of having high income and always on medications.  Life is short and unpredictable on this earth, so try to enjoy every moment when you’re still awake.

that is what happen to me when i was a project manager for one of the construction firm in Kuala Lumpur, i was send to most of the delayed project and have to take all responsibility on the mistake done by the previous project manager like 5 nos of them and 1 Sr manager, i have to be the scape goat and answer all the delay which i notice all was due to the mistake done before like erection to Tower Crane on the wrong place, planing and execution of work which the previous leaders just organize to carry out work for the tower block and forget about the podium block which consist of 6 floor with swimming pool.I have to make sure the podium is up and even the tower block should be ahead one step from the normal progress time, to reorganize on the site supervision and mitigation program, house keeping to carry out and take all the blame where after more than 6 month i was attack with hypertension. so i leave the company and joint my present company with a lower position as not to stress out too much

A little stress is good for your mental health, that’s according to some health guide books but too much will kill you. No point doing a job that going to affect your health even if the money is good. None of the CEOs, COOs, Presidents, VPs and MDs in companies that I know are really healthy. All of them are on medications for high blood pressure, diabetes and/or high cholesterol level. Some have problem with their livers due to excessive drinking. What a pity! High income earners with health problems. Your decision to quit your previous job and take up a lower position job with less stress was a good move.
